The short answer

No, not according to Donald Hoffman. The cognitive scientist and UC Irvine professor emeritus argues that evolution never tuned our senses to show us reality as it is, so brains and neurons are icons on an interface rather than the machinery behind it. His evolutionary game theory simulations found that organisms tuned to fitness payoffs drove truth-seeing organisms extinct, and that the fitness payoff functions themselves almost never carry information about the structure of the world. From there he flips the usual order: consciousness is fundamental, and space and time are a cheap headset worn by a network of interacting conscious agents. Hoffman is blunt that this is his argument and not the consensus. He says about 99 percent of his colleagues assume the opposite, that physical systems come first and consciousness arrives late, and he treats his own theory as a mathematical tool with limits rather than the truth.

  1. Start with the desktop, not the metaphysics

    Hoffman's entry point is a computer desktop. You drag a blue file icon to the trash, and nothing blue or rectangular happens inside the machine. The icon is useful precisely because it hides millions of voltages you have no business toggling. He says perception works the same way, and that this is why evolution would build it that way. Get that much and the rest of the argument has somewhere to stand.

  2. Ask any theory where it stops

    Hoffman keeps returning to one test. A good theory is precise enough to tell you its own limits. Einstein's spacetime is his example: the math says it has no operational meaning below ten to the minus thirty-three centimeters, so Einstein's own theory marks the end of Einstein's own theory. Hoffman applies the same test to evolution, and to his own work, which he expects to be replaced.

  3. Sit still long enough to watch your thoughts

    Hoffman has meditated for about 22 years. He started for a plain reason, he needed to sleep and didn't want pills. What he says it gave him was the ability to step back and see thoughts as thoughts, and emotions as emotions, rather than as himself. Underneath the content, he says, is awareness with nothing in it. That's the thing his math ended up pointing at.

  4. Go read the papers instead of taking his word for it

    Hoffman names them in the episode and says they're free online. Objects of Consciousness lays out the network of conscious agents. Fusions of Consciousness shows the mapping from those dynamics onto decorated permutations, one of the combinatorial objects the physicists found.   5. Treat the person across from you as the same consciousness

    This is where Hoffman thinks the theory actually cashes out. If there's one consciousness wearing different avatars, then love your neighbor as yourself stops being a nice sentiment and becomes a description. He says the competition you feel is the game, not the reality. He also says he still gets sucked back into the game, most of the time.

  6. Let the fact of death reorganize your motivations

    Hoffman spent 36 hours in an arrhythmia his doctors couldn't stop, at 190 beats per minute, and texted his wife goodbye. He says taking death seriously means almost everything you spend your time on has to be reevaluated. Getting rich won't stop it. It just gives you more to walk away from.
